Statement of Faith

At the Rwanda Institute of Evangelical Theology (RIET) we believe in:

1. The plenary, verbal, divine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures; their total infallibility as delivered in the original manuscripts, and their supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

2. The unity and trinity of God, eternally existing in three persons equal and divine – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

3. God the creator of all things, who continues to uphold the universe he created.

4. The creation of man and woman in the image of God and the fundamental unity of the human race, such that every human person is worthy of respect, without distinction of race, social class or gender.

5. The two natures – both perfect divinity and perfect humanity – of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is God incarnate, which are inseparably and eternally united in one person without confusion and without division.

6. The iniquity and guilt of humanity and the corruption of human nature since the fall, which expose every person to the anger and condemnation of God.

7. Complete redemption from the guilt, penalty, power and corruption of sin by the unique means both of the propitiatory death of Jesus Christ – who suffered the penalty of sin, namely death and the wrath of God, as the representative and substitute of his people – and of his physical resurrection from the dead.

8. Salvation only through the grace of God, which is received by faith alone and not by works, and works as a fruit and visible evidence of salvation.

9. The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death and resurrection of Christ effective in bringing salvation to the individual sinner, producing in him conviction of sin and regeneration, leading to repentance towards God and faith in Jesus Christ, and remaining in him to produce the fruit of the Spirit in his life, and to equip him for works of service and for a life that pleases God and glorifies him.

10. The eternal security of the true believer, who has assurance of salvation only because of the work of Christ for him.

11. The one, true, holy, universal and apostolic church, which is the body of Jesus Christ who is its head, and which consists of all the redeemed, united with Christ and with one another by the Holy Spirit.

12. The responsibility of the church to glorify God and make disciples of all nations, as stated in Matthew 28:18-20.

13. The personal, visible and glorious return of Jesus Christ to judge the living and the dead.

14. The physical resurrection of believers to eternal life and bliss in the new earth, and the resurrection of unbelievers to eternal punishment in hell.
